Workshops

• Workshops are 60 and minutes long.
• Workshops will be scheduled throughout the meeting.
• Submitting authors should be prepared to present in the time slot assigned.
• Scheduling requests are not accepted.

2. Presented in Conjunction with: Optional. Typically, with an SGIM Committee, Commission, or Interest Group.
3. Session Abstract: ≤ 3,000 characters, including spaces. Please exclude self-identifying information, including presenter names or institutions. Should include background on why this topic is important, the overall objective of the workshop, content that you plan to teach, and highlight what the audience will take away from the session.
4. Brief Session Summary: 250-character limit summary that will be displayed in the mobile app.
5. Learning Objectives: (minimum 2 required). Should be clear, specific, and active.

7. Session Agenda: (See sample below) At least five minutes must be allocated for workshop attendees to complete session evaluations. Please exclude self-identifying information such as presenter names or institutions.

• Workshop submissions must identify one (and only one) session coordinator. Co-coordinators are not an option.
  • Session coordinators will be responsible for confirming all faculty will be available to host the workshop at the scheduled time during the RSVP process.
• Workshop submissions may include up to four (4) additional workshop faculty members for a total of five (5) workshop faculty (including the session coordinator). We strongly encourage members to collaborate across institutions.
• Every workshop faculty member must have an updated ScholarOne account before they are added to a workshop submission.
• NOTE to submitting authors: Please make sure you inform people before you add them to your submission. Everyone will receive an email submission confirmation.

Submitting authors select the category for the submission that best reflects the work. Workshop categories will determine the assigned review committee and be scored against other workshops in the same category. During the meeting, the program committee does its best to schedule sessions within the same category at different times to avoid conflicts, but this is not always possible.

Please select the most appropriate target audience for each workshop submission from those listed below. Up to two selections are acceptable. In selecting a target audience, authors should identify the group most likely to benefit from attending the workshop:

Highly rated workshops make good use of the time allotted and incorporate active learning strategies.  The agenda should ensure the learning objectives are met and adequate time is allowed for each activity, taking into account additional time needed for transitions to small group breakout sessions or other activities. We encourage presenters to create a learning environment where attendees of diverse perspectives can feel safe to contribute and learn. 

How to Craft a Great Workshop Application

Topic

• Make it FOCUSED: For example, if you want to present on “breast cancer screening” instead choose “Impact of breast density on breast cancer screening recommendations”. 
• Make it TIMELY: Choose a topic that is currently relevant to your audience. For example, new guidelines, controversial subjects, related to the meeting theme.

Team

• CONTRIBUTIONS: Consider how each person will contribute to your workshop. One person who is a “big picture” person, one who is experienced with workshop presentations, one person who is “detail-oriented,” for example.

Learning Objectives

• LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Should be active (written with an action verb), clear, and directly relate to your content. You should be able to read the learning objectives and know exactly what topics will be taught. Example of learning objectives.

Abstract

• Make it STRUCTURED: Follow a basic structure:
  • Background: What is the nature of the topic being presented and the knowledge gap your workshop will fill? 
  • Objectives: What is the goal of the workshop?
  • Content Delivery: Describe what you are teaching and how you will teach it.  
  • Takeaways: Highlight any knowledge, skill, of physical (PPT, worksheet, etc) take aways the audience will leave with. 
• Make it PRACTICE CHANGING: Participants should be able to apply new knowledge of skill on your topic in their patient care, teaching, research or other professional activities.

Agenda

• Make it CLEAR: Reviewers will only know what you’ve told them in your abstract. Your agenda should supplement your abstract to make it clear how your content will be taught. 
• Make it INTERACTIVE: This is a workshop, highlight how your workshop will create an exchange of ideas amongst the presenters and/or participants. 
  • Active learning: Some ideas are case/problem based small group activities, simulations, workbooks, interactive polling, facilitated discussion.  
  • Breakout Sessions: Limit to two per 60-minute session due to time constraints.

Once Accepted, How to Run a Great Workshop

Planning for Your Session

• Use Your Time Wisely:
  • Allot specific amounts of time to each speaker/topic 
  • Intro/background should be 3-5 minutes only 
  • Didactic content should only contain absolutely essential information
• Assign Roles: Pre-plan what each speaker will be in charge of including during small group facilitation.  
• Run a Test Session: Before the presentation ensure your timing works, do a full run through with the entire team .

During the Session

• Double-check your technology 10 minutes before the presentation.
• Start on TIME.
• Ensure all speakers have their devices in DO NOT DISTURB mode.
• Use a timekeeper to ensure the session stays on schedule.

Below are the criteria workshop co-chairs will use for workshop selection.

• Peer review score: Each workshop will be peer-reviewed by multiple members of the SGIM community and given a summative score. This score will be compared to other workshops within the same category, and the highest-scoring workshops within each category will typically be accepted first when possible.
• Duplicate Author/Groups: Given the high number of submissions, the same first author/or group of authors will only have one workshop accepted per year unless there is an exceptional need/reason. Individuals/teams are welcome to submit multiple workshops, but in most circumstances, only one will be accepted for presentation.
• Similar topics: Well-rated workshops may not be accepted due to duplicate topics. Given the limited number of presentation slots and the diversity of the SGIM audience, we will attempt to include a broad range of learning activities and exclude repeat workshops on the same topic when appropriate.
• Commission/Committee support: Workshops with support from a commission/committee will be selected first when all other criteria are equal (i.e., of a similar score, topic diversity, etc.).
• Chair discretion: The co-chairs may use their discretion to select topics that sound applicable to the broadest range of SGIM attendees, meet a unique topic/need in the internal medicine community, or specifically highlight the meeting theme.

Up to three David E. Rogers Junior Faculty awards will be given to junior faculty for workshops judged the most outstanding among those presented at the 2027 Annual Meeting.

To be eligible, the workshop submitter must be an SGIM member and faculty at the instructor or assistant professor level at the time of the 2027 Annual Meeting.

Awarded to the workshop that has attendance (≥ 20), participant evaluations (≥ 50%) with the highest overall rating are considered in determining the recipients. Please note eligibility at the time of your online submission.
