Special Symposia

Special Symposia are 60-minute didactic sessions. Proposals that rely on small-group discussion are better suited to the Workshops track and should be submitted there.

Each submission requires the following:

1. Title
2. Relation to Meeting Theme
3. Session Summary
4. Collaboration
5. Member Confirmation (submissions may only be made by current SGIM Committee, Commission, Task Force, or Workgroup members)
6. Target Audience
7. Learning Objectives (2 required; each objective should reflect one of the six ACGME Core Competencies)
8. Session Agenda
9. Session History
10. Category

The submission site opens July 14, 2026 and closes August 4, 2026. Submit through the official portal at https://sgim27.abstractcentral.com. There is no submission fee.

Only submissions received by the August 4, 2026 deadline will be considered.

The Annual Meeting Program Committee will evaluate all submissions received by the August 4, 2026 deadline. Decision notifications will be sent by September 11, 2026.

Presenter Registration Policy: Accepted presenters are required to register for and pay the Annual Meeting registration fee. Acknowledgment of this policy is required at the time of submission. Honoraria are not offered to Special Symposia presenters.

The following are examples and starting points, not an exhaustive list. We welcome all submissions related to the meeting theme.

Reflecting on the Past

• A retrospective on SGIM's role in advancing academic medicine, medical education, and/or clinical research over the past 50 years
• A panel featuring pioneering SGIM members reflecting on the founding vision and early challenges
• How SGIM has helped physicians become leaders through advocacy, administration, and academic impact
• The Greatest Successes and Unfinished Work of General Internal Medicine: A Fifty-Year Assessment
• The Evolving Role of Professional Societies in Academic Medicine: Lessons from SGIM's First 50 Years

Examining Current Inflection Points

• Addressing burnout, pipeline shortages, and scope-of-practice debates
• A Sign of the Times: how the practice of medicine has changed over time
• A crucial issue in medicine that led to systemic change
• A critical assessment of progress and persistent gaps in general internal medicine
• An important issue in medicine that has been overlooked but deserves attention now and in the future

Envisioning the Future

• How medical education and teaching will be different in the future
• Looking back from 2050 at the pressing questions in GIM answered since 2027
• Primary Care in 2050: What Should We Build Between Now and Then?
• The General Internist in 2040: What Will Humans Still Do?
• Mentorship across generations and how to sustain physicians in academic GIM
